Click here for the Amsterdam wedding overview. On the Wednesday before the wedding, Janice's mother and brother George arrived. They arrived pretty early and were not tired, surprisingly. So my mother took them to Zaandam, the closest big town. The day after we went to Amsterdam to do some more sightseeing. The Zaandam city center has got a shopping street and Dam square, which is not mainly bars and restaurants. The claim to fame of this place is that Tsar Peter from Russia visited the town to study the shipmaking. There is a Tsar Peter monument and a Tsar Peter house. So far the local tourist information...
The city and area are named after the river Zaan, the town is named after the dam in the Zaan (gives you an idea of what Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Volendam, Monnickendam etc mean). Anyways... Below is the sluice in the Zaan and as you can see, a vessel is just passing through.
On the Thursday we went to Amsterdam. Good timing with a strike of local transport! At least it was quiet in the city, but it did mean a lot of walking. We went to Anne Frank's house and at that time my mother picked Amy up from the airport. I went to pick her up from Central station and we took the canal tour.
