Hong Kong Wedding - Playing the groom (05/2005)

Click here for the Hong Kong wedding overview.

On the 21st of May 2005 it was finally our wedding day. After all the preparations, stress and expense it was showtime. Janice had booked a suite so that she could spend the last night going through a hair combing ritual and prepare properly.

On the day itself, the first thing was for me to meet up the 'brothers' who would help me get Janice out of the clutches of the 'sisters' who don't want to release her. Chi Man, Anders, Michael, Darren and Vik were my brothers. My parents did not want to miss a thing and followed everything camera in hand.

Here I am, getting ready for the big day. The photos and video needed the parents of the groom in the picture too.

Now that the brothers have arrived I have to collect Janice. But the sisters won't let me. They play games with the groom until there perversions are satisfied. It all starts with balloons containing pieces of paper. I had to make a sentence of 9 words with them. The brothers did a lot of watching at this point, but they would get in action soon!

Off to collect the bride!  I'm bogged down with pink notes

Once I had the words making a sentence is not as easy as it sounds. No verbs and a lot of shouting ladies around me did not make it any easier! But I got there with a grammatical howler.

Making a sentence proves difficult But I got there

And it went downhill from there. The next task was to drink a cup of sweet, sour, bitter and spicy water. And where I drank a small cup, one of the brothers had to volunteer with a pint glass. Vik mistake number 1 - how to volunteer at the wrong time. He got a glass full of chilli oil which was watered down, but still kinda hot. He drank it to his credit (because there were girls present according to Roomie).

yum yum chilli oil! Sugar water is much better. Darren did not like that.

I will spare you the banana eating task Let's just say that I have an agreement with Vik that if I don't publish a particular picture he won't publish another particular picture.

And then there was this. The gentlemen had to wear diapers over their suit and I had to wear an apron. Then I had to go out and collect 5 signatures. The first 3 were easy as people did not get a chance to flee. After that I have never seen people run like that. Until some tourist did not notice me and I got the final signatures. And proof is in the pictures.

Fashion show  Proof. 5 signatures.

And the final and most disgusting challenge was brushing my teeth with Wasabi, the Japanese mustard. I will only publish the 'before' picture.

The skeptical look proved well justified.

And finally I got her. I had to promise something in Cantonese (which I apparently pronounced in swear words) but she came out. Picture 2 shows what she thought of my reading skills, but I was forgiven. Her brother, George, escorts her out of her room.

I am swearing a list of promises The happiest day of her life The happiest day of her life!
